About the role

The position is situated within the Shire's Family Services and Community Planning Unit in the Social Planning & Community Development Team's Warringinee Group and reports to the Senior Social Planner, Aboriginal Cultural and Community Development. The Warringinee Group promotes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community participation by facilitating partnerships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, Council, government agencies and other organisations.

 Critical to this role is maintaining a collaborative relationship with other support agencies to promote services, facilities, programs and opportunities that foster Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health and wellbeing and participate in a range of cultural awareness initiatives throughout each calendar year.

 To be successful in this role you will be able to:

  • Maintain professional working relationships between the Mornington Peninsula Shire, Traditional Custodians, Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association, Baluk Arts and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations.
  • Collaborate on the development of events, programs and projects when required within the Mornington Peninsula Shire.
  • Implement, support and collaborate on annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community events, programs and projects such as Reconciliation week, NAIDOC week and Harmony week.
  • Support community participation in decision making and community development activities while applying a broad range of community development and engagement processes and practices to implement these strategies.
  • Provide support in the implementation of key community actions with councils Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Promote and support Cultural Awareness and reconciliation to address access and equity issues of service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
  • Seek out and apply for external funding opportunities.
  • Produce detailed plans with clearly defined objectives and actions for achieving them, monitor performance against objectives, managing risks and issues and ensuring unit business plan objectives are met.
  • Produce and manage the distribution of the Warringinee Newsletter, fact sheets and other publications as required.
  • Maintain Warringinee Group’s web content and Facebook page.
  • Provide monthly reports and attend council meetings when required.
  • Manage queries made through Warringinee Group e-mail.
  • Provide Secretariat Support to Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group/s.
  • Participate in team activities and Shire programs as required.
  • Hold a current Driver's Licence
  • Hold an Employee Working with Children Check (mandatory)
  • Be prepared to undertake an Australian Criminal History Check (mandatory)
